The Establishing Shot: JOE WRIGHT TO DIRECT ANNA KARENINA; KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, JUDE LAW, AARON JOHNSON TO STAR IN TOM STOPPARD-SCRIPTED ADAPTATION

Joe Wright will direct the epic romance Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). The Working Title Films production will commence filming in the U.K. and Russia this month. Focus Features will distribute the movie domestically, and Universal Pictures International (UPI) will distribute the movie internationally, in the second half of 2012.

Anna Karenina marks Mr. Wright’s third Working Title movie with Focus and UPI, following the award-winning boxoffice successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. Also for Working Title and UPI, he directed The Soloist; also for Focus, he most recently directed the hit adventure thriller Hanna.

Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing Anna Karenina with Paul Webster; the three were Academy Award nominees as the producers of Mr. Wright’s Best Picture-nominated Atonement. Also with Focus, Mr. Webster was a Golden Globe Award nominee as producer of Eastern Promises.

Keira Knightley, Academy Award-nominated for Pride & Prejudice, will star as Anna Karenina in her third collaboration with Mr. Wright. Ms. Knightley will be starring opposite two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law, as Anna’s husband Aleksei Karenin; and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy), as Count Vronsky. Rounding out the cast will be Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, Olivia Williams (Hanna), and Ruth Wilson (Luther).

Also reteaming with Mr. Wright on Anna Karenina are Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli, twice-Academy Award-nominated costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and three-time Academy Award-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood. The cinematographer will be Academy Award winner Philippe Rousselot. Melanie Ann Oliver (Focus’ Jane Eyre) will edit the feature. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be the choreographer on the movie.

The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.

Mr. Bevan commented, “Everyone at Working Title is proud to affirm a longtime collaboration with Joe Wright through this, our fourth picture together. That we are able to re-convene cast and crew from Pride & Prejudice and Atonement makes it all the more exciting. We anticipate that this will be a defining screen version of Anna Karenina.”

Universal Pictures markets and distributes films internationally through Universal Pictures International (UPI), which officially began doing business on January 1, 2007. In the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, Benelux, Russia, Australia, Mexico and France, UPI directly markets and distributes movies through our local offices, creating campaigns and release strategies that respond to the culture and market behavior of those territories. In other parts of the world, Universal distributes through Paramount’s local offices as it transitions out of the formerly shared UIP model. In some smaller territories we continue to work through UIP on theatrical distribution.

Working Title Films, co-chaired by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner since 1992, is one of the world’s leading film production companies. Founded in 1983, Working Title has made nearly 100 films that have grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. Its films have won 6 Academy Awards, 26 BAFTA Awards, and prestigious prizes at the Cannes and Berlin International Film Festivals. In addition to Anna Karenina, the 2011/2012 slate includes Tomas Alfredson’s thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy; Baltasar Kormákur’s Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale; Asif Kapadia’s Senna, the company’s first documentary feature, about legendary race car driver Ayrton Senna; Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English Reborn, directed by Oliver Parker; and Ken Kwapis’ Everybody Loves Whales, starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski.

The Establishing Shot : JANE EYRE TRAILER

In a bold new feature version of Jane Eyre, director Cary Joji Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) and screenwriter Moira Buffini (Tamara Drewe) infuse a contemporary immediacy into Charlotte Brontë's timeless, classic story. Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) star in the iconic lead roles of the romantic drama, the heroine of which continues to inspire new generations of devoted readers and viewers.

In the 19th Century-set story, Jane Eyre (played by Ms. Wasikowska) suddenly flees Thornfield Hall, the vast and isolated estate where she works as a governess for Adèle Varens, a child under the custody of Thornfield's brooding master, Edward Rochester (Mr. Fassbender). The imposing residence -- and Rochester's own imposing nature -- have sorely tested her resilience. With nowhere else to go, she is extended a helping hand by clergyman St. John Rivers (Jamie Bell of Focus Features' The Eagle) and his family. As she recuperates in the Rivers' Moor House and looks back upon the tumultuous events that led to her escape, Jane wonders if the past is ever truly past...

Aged 10, the orphaned Jane (played by Amelia Clarkson) is mistreated and then cast out of her childhood home Gateshead by her cruel aunt, Mrs. Reed (Golden Globe Award winner Sally Hawkins). Consigned to the charity school Lowood, Jane encounters further harsh treatment but receives an education and meets Helen Burns (Freya Parks), a poor child who impresses Jane as a soulful and contented person. The two become firm friends. When Helen falls fatally ill, the loss devastates Jane, yet strengthens her resolve to stand up for herself and make the just choices in life.

As a teenager, Jane arrives at Thornfield. She is treated with kindness and respect by housekeeper Mrs. Fairfax (Academy Award winner Judi Dench). Jane's interest is piqued by Rochester, who engages her in games of wit and storytelling, and divulges to her some of his innermost thoughts. But his dark moods are troubling to Jane, as are strange goings-on in the house -- especially the off-limits attic. She dares to intuit a deep connection with Rochester, and she is not wrong; but once she uncovers the terrible secret that he had hoped to hide from her forever, she flees, finding a home with the Rivers family. When St. John Rivers makes Jane a surprising proposal, she realizes that she must return to Thornfield -- to secure her own future and finally, to conquer what haunts both her and Rochester.

The Establishing Shot: BLOOD RUNS COLD TRAILER

The debut feature from director Sonny Laguna, the low-budget Swedish horror flick Blood Runs Cold takes the classic slasher template set down by John Carpenter with “Halloween” and gives it a Scandinavian make-over that chills to the bone.

Laguna’s hugely impressive and truly independent film – amazingly shot for just $5,000 US on a Canon 7D digital SLR using the camera’s movie mode function – not only succeeds in delivering plenty of shocks and gore, it also features a brilliant debut feature performance by newcomer Hanna Oldenberg in the lead role of Winona, a musician whose leisurely working vacation becomes a terrifying fight for survival.

Following a busy year of relative success in the record business, Winona heads back to her tiny hometown in the remote outskirts of Stockholm to stay at a house her manager has rented where she can relax alone and hopefully find the inspiration to write some new songs. As a snowstorm brews and night begins to fall, she manages to find the house but is disappointed to discover it’s not the luxurious retreat she was expecting.

Shortly after settling in, Winona becomes unsettled by the creepy creaking sounds of the old house and decides to head to a bar in town for refreshments and some company. There, she bumps into a former boyfriend and a couple he knows and invites them back to the house for a few drinks. At the end of the night, with everyone either too drunk or too tired to drive home, they decide to crash until morning. But as the four friends prepare to sleep, an unknown presence stirs within the house, one that has been watching and waiting for the right moment to strike.

The Establishing Shot: ATROCIOUS TRAILER

In the spring of 2010, the Quintanilla family travelled to their old rural family farmhouse near Sitges, Spain for a quiet break together during the Easter holiday. To pass the time and to amuse themselves, teenage siblings Christian and July set about investigating a local urban legend, that of The Girl Of Garraf Woods, relating to a series of hauntings and ghostly goings-on in a wooded labyrinth in a gated property near to their house. The pair decided to document their day-to-day adventures and their findings on video with the intention of posting the footage online at a later date.

Five days later, on 4th April 2010, the bodies of the Quintanilla family were found in the farmhouse, the members having died in extremely mysterious circumstances. In the aftermath, the police identified and reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded material relating to the events leading up to the grisly discovery. To celebrate the 30th birthday of the greatest secret agent the world has ever known and one of Britain’s best loved animated characters, Danger Mouse, this September FremantleMedia Enterprises is releasing Danger Mouse – The Complete Collection 30th Anniversary Edition as a 10-disc DVD set featuring every single episode of Danger Mouse and, for the first time ever, in the correct screening order. First broadcast on 28th September 1981 and starring David Jason as the intrepid hero and Terry Scott as his faithful but bumbling assistant Penfold, Danger Mouse was an instant hit with children and adults alike and has since become a national institution. The show’s enormous popularity was confirmed when it ranked third in Channel 4’s poll of the 100 Greatest Kids’ TV Shows, just behind The Simpsons and The Muppet Show, respectively, and ahead of the likes of Bagpuss, Scooby-Doo, Wallace and Gromit and even Doctor Who!

Operating from a secret base concealed in a post box on a quiet corner in Mayfair, Danger Mouse and Penfold are committed to fighting evil and villainy wherever they raise their ugly heads. Their commanding officer and the Head of World Security is Colonel K, a gruff and absent-minded old chinchilla who remains in contact with his two best agents by a videophone linked to Danger Mouse’s flat and car. Amongst all the world’s villains, their number one arch-nemesis is a despicable toad known as Baron Silas Greenback. Assisted by his pet caterpillar, Nero, and a skinny Italian crow with a heart as black as his feathers, known as Stiletto, Greenback is known in criminal circles as the greatest evil genius in the universe because of the brilliant inventions and diabolical schemes he uses to make his dream of ruling the world a reality. Only Danger Mouse and Penfold stand between the Baron and world domination.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: THIS IS JINSY IS COMING TO SKY ATLANTIC

THIS IS JINSY is set on a little island whose 791 residents are monitored by 1,067 tessellators. These tessellators include video cameras for surveillance as well as little screens to allow the residents to watch important island events, such as the tri-annual island cow wash (live from Glotters field). They also include a handy slot for paying fines, and a sphincter nozzle for product and pill downloads. (There's a hook at the back to put your coat on too!).

Arbiter Maven (the 17th Arbiter and ‘Wearer of the Hat’) is assisted by Sporall (nice hair and ‘Wearer of the Beige Suit’). From the Great Tower in the parish of Veen, they observe video feeds from the tessellators and keep a watchful eye on the residents.

The Governor of Jinsy is known as The Great He.

Jinsy Praise Him!

Sky Atlantic HD - 10.10pm 19 September, 2011

Sky Atlantic HD is thrilled to announce a host of guest stars that will make appearances across its first original comedy commission, This Is Jinsy, including David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Simon Callow, Harry Hill, Jennifer Saunders, and many more.

Harry Hill will also make his debut in this episode as the sinister Joon Boolay, who delivers punishments to residents across the island from the safety of her TV studio.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: STRAW DOGS - SAM PECKINPAH’S MASTERPIECE RESTORED AND REMASTERED FOR BLU-RAY

Coinciding with its 40th anniversary and with the forthcoming theatrical release (on 4th November 2011) of the remake directed by Rod Lurie and starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard and James Woods, director Sam Peckinpah’s notorious thriller Straw Dogs has been carefully restored and remastered for release on two-disc DVD and for the first time ever as a features-packed Special Edition Blu-ray on 24th October 2011.

Based on Gordon M. Williams's novel The Siege Of Trencher's Farm, and starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, Straw Dogs marked Peckinpah's first directorial step outside the Western genre and into a contemporary (and uniquely British) setting. The result is an unflinching and uncompromising study of primal, barbaric brutality that is generally regarded as one of the strongest statements about violence ever put on screen.

Quiet American mathematician David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman) and his British-born wife Amy (Susan George) relocate to Amy's rural English hometown in an attempt to flee the violent social unrest brewing in the US. When David hires some locals, including a former boyfriend of Amy's, to repair his barn, the couple find themselves being subtly harassed and bullied by the workmen. The more the pacifist David ignores the problem, the more the harassment intensifies, leading to terrifying consequences as he ultimately finds himself forced to defend his home and his life, discovering a frighteningly vicious side to himself as events escalate towards a bloody climax.
Boasting outstanding performances from the two leads (particularly Hoffman), a brilliant support cast, and Jerry Fielding's superb Oscar-nominated score, Straw Dogs, in the 40 years since its original release, has lost none of its intense, visceral power to thrill and shock in equal measure.

Undisputedly a director ahead of his time, Sam Peckinpah's uncompromising approach often saw him being reviled and vilified in some quarters while being hailed in others. Nonetheless, in Straw Dogs he displays a cinematic artistry very few filmmakers have touched upon before or since.
Straw Dogs (cert. 18) will be released on Blu-ray (£17.99) and two-disc DVD (£15.99) by FremantleMedia Enterprises on 24th October 2011.
Special Features include: audio commentary by Katy Haber (Dialogue Director and Peckinpah's associate, close friend and PA); audio commentary by Peckinpah biographers Garner Simmons, David Weddle and Paul Seydor; isolated Oscar nominated score by Jerry Fielding; 2.0 Stereo audio; optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired interviews with actress Susan George, producer Dan Melnick and Garner Simmons (author of “Peckinpah: A Portrait In Montage); stills galleries; original US theatrical trailer; TV and radio spots; 1971 on location documentary; Before and After restoration comparisons; Straw Dogs and the Censors; The Peckinpah-Pinter Letters; Sam and Dan correspondence; Why Call The Film Straw Dogs?; The Dan Melnick-BBFC Letters; the Times review and critic outrage; New York Times articles; 1972 BBFC defence against local authority banning; 1999 BBFC Home Video Statement; 2002 BBFC Home Video Statement; 2001 Uncut magazine feature; Consider This A Bad Review; the deleted Pub Scene; film facts and trivia.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: SPEEDY SINGH AKS BREAKAWAY UNITES THE CREME DE LA CREME OF MAINSTREAM & INDIAN TALENT ON SCREEN IN THE CROSSOVER FILM OF 2011

However, further conflict arises for Rajveer at home, as his orthodox Sikh father (Anupam Kher) wants him to dedicate his life to the family business and the Sikh faith. Caught at the crossroads between family duty and following his dreams, Rajveer prepares for the biggest challenge and game of his life.

‘SPEEDY SINGH’ UNITES THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME OF MAINSTREAM &
INDIAN TALENT ON SCREEN IN THE CROSSOVER FILM OF 2011

Hollywood Director Robert Lieberman presents one of the most heartfelt Cross-Cultural Dramas of recent times, releasing on 23rd September 2011

Some of the most lauded and iconic stars from American, Canadian and Indian cinema and entertainment join forces in 2011’s most poignant drama, ‘Speedy Singh’, releasing in cinemas worldwide and in the UK on Friday 23rd September 2011. Produced by First Take Entertainment and Hari Om Entertainment, ‘Speedy Singh’ is a gripping, cross-cultural hockey drama set in the Indo-Canadian community of suburban Toronto, Canada.

Directed by Hollywood filmmaker Robert Lieberman (‘D3: The Mighty Ducks’, ‘Table for Five’), ‘Speedy Singh’ features Hollywood heartthrob, Rob Lowe; global comedy sensation Russell Peters and the demure Camilla Belle (‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’, ‘10,000 BC’) alongside Indian stars including sensational screen debutant Vinay Virmani who delivers a world class performance, and veteran of Indian cinema Anupam Kher (‘Bend it like Beckham’). The co-producer of the film is India’s biggest star, Akshay Kumar, who is the first Bollywood star to become a producer of a major Hollywood film. Akshay continues to make his mark in Hollywood and makes a guest appearance as himself in the film. A galaxy of other exciting cameos are provided by the likes of recording artist and actor Aubrey “Drake” Graham and Grammy Award winning rapper Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. Ludacris added his vocals to the cross-urban music track of the year, “Shera Di Kaum”, the promotional song for ‘Speedy Singh’, where he also features in the video. The track is already championing the airwaves and global playlists ahead of the film’s release.

Riveting, entertaining but also entrenched in a strong social context, ‘Speedy Singh’ explores the issues of race relations, migration and cross-cultural tensions while superbly balancing both tenderness and humour. It tells the story of a young man caught between two cultures and two sets of ideals. The film speaks of the sports genre underdog, but in this case, the underdog reflects issues of assimilation that immigrants deal with daily as they strive for acceptance in their new home country.

‘Speedy Singh’ also has a generational story to tell, as a young man tries to find his way in a new, western world, daring to disobey his father’s sacred traditions. It gives the audience an insight into the little known Sikh culture, a beautifully humble group of South Asians that embrace a strong sense of community. These real issues ground ‘Speedy Singh’ in a story that has deep resonance – even in its hilarity, it has poignancy.

Comments Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, “Breakaway is a touching story about a young Indian Ice Hockey player who wants to get into the big league. I am introducing Vinay Virmani, who is a very good Ice Hockey player in real life as well. The film is about an Indian family wanting to break the stranglehold that mainstream communities have abroad in sports.”
