Trailer for British Independent Feature Making Ugly

What lies behind the dark bonds that link seemingly disparate characters and the horrible crimes committed when no one is really looking?

Making Ugly is a provocative, dark thriller, the debut feature film of writer/director Andrew Niblo. Making Ugly features an impressive Scottish and English ensemble cast of rising stars from UK theatre and television. Already tagged as “the next great gritty British thriller” Making Ugly is a powerful experience that will keep you guessing from start to finish.

Making Ugly follows the tales of three captivating characters on a sinister journey. As the worlds they know are changing and crumbling around them, they too transform in ways that you would never expect.

Neil (Paul Quinn) is a tormented, exiled family man with a secret. Heather (Margaret Ann Bain) is a woman on the edge and about to discover her own terrifying strength. When the mysterious Stark (Jamie Jack Gordon) enters their lives he lures them into an ugly world of mystery and deceit. No one can be trusted when you are Making Ugly.

Behind the scenes the uniqueness of Making Ugly lies in the manner it was produced. From the initial stages of development, the producers faced the challenge of realising Andrew Niblo's vision and securing the necessary cast, crew, equipment and locations usually seen in mid-budget films with extremely limited funds. Through ingenious strategies and sheer determination, Mara Adina and Dara Carroll completed Making Ugly on the incredibly low budget of £7,000.

Release Date: Making Ugly is currently seeking Distribution

The Taqwacores Trailer

Shot on an ultra-low budget, THE TAQWACORES is independent film-making at its very best. Directed by Eyad Zahra, with music from American Muslim punk band The Kominas and starring a hip, young cast including Bobby Naderi, Noureen de Wulf and Dominic Rains, THE TAQWACORES is a thought-provoking and insurrectionary tale that will not just appeal to fans of Punk music but anyone who wants a fascinating insight into Muslim youth in the western world or who remembers what it is like to be a teenager.

Yusef (Bobby Naderi) a first-generation Pakistani engineering student, moves off-campus with a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. His new “unorthodox” housemates soon introduce him to Taqwacore - a hardcore, Muslim punk rock scene that only exists on the West Coast.

As the seasons change, Taqwacore influences the house more and more. The living room becomes a mosque during the day, while it continues to host punk parties at night. Ultimately, Taqwacore influences Yusef too, as he begins to challenge his own faith and ideologies.

THE TAQWACORES deals with the complexities of being young and Muslim in modern-day America and smells achingly cool of teen spirit.

Described as the “Catcher in the Rye” for American Muslims and based on the cult Los Angeles novel by Michael Mohammad Knight which was originally handed out free in parking lots in America, THE TAQWACORES (15) is set to open at UK cinemas on 12th August at Empire Leicester Square plus key cities.

TO – 2001 Nights - Clip Three

From Fumihiko Sori (Ichi; Ping Pong), director of the groundbreaking CG animated feature “Vexille”, comes another breathtaking sci-fi spectacle, this time in the form of a two-episode OVA. Adapted from two unrelated stories from the 19 stories that make up the “2001 Nights” manga written and illustrated by Yukinobu Hoshino, TO – 2001 Nights is a beautifully envisioned homage to the golden age of literary and cinematic science fiction.

In the first of the two stories, Elliptical Orbit, the crew aboard the earth-orbiting space station Midnight Bazooka are busy propelling containers of essential supplies toward a moon-base when they are visited by the starship, the Flying Dutchman. Returning from a 15-year mission in deep space, the Dutchman is carrying a cargo of liquid protons bound for earth. Thanks to extended periods of hyper-sleep, the ship’s captain, Maria, has remained her young, beautiful self while her former lover and captain of the Bazooka, Dan, has aged as normal, but still their emotional bonds remain as strong as ever. As Dan and Maria catch up on old times, the space station is invaded by an army of terrorists intent on destroying the moon-base by firing the Dutchman’s cargo into it. Heavily outgunned and outnumbered, Dan and Maria’s respective crew members are forced to join together in a deadly face-off to save their own lives and those of their colleagues on the moon.

An interstellar Romeo and Juliet romance forms the heart of Symbiotic Planet as two young lovers from different human outposts on the same alien planet conduct their relationship in secret against the wishes of their superiors. Ion is a member of the American-European outpost, while his sweetheart Alena hails from the Eurasian contingent. Despite UN intervention, a dispute over territorial rights between the two contingents threatens to degenerate into a military conflict. As hostilities begin to escalate, Ion is accidentally exposed to an unknown variety of alien spores in his outpost’s research lab and is forced to quarantine himself as his body begins to mutate. But, with the two factions now on the brink of war, it is up to the strangely transformed Ion to convince the antagonists that there is another, albeit non-human, option.
